Interview: "Flying Accident" with Shin Dong-hyun

Once again we have a special interview for our audience here on the KOFFIA blog, this time with the director of short film "Flying Accident" Shin Dong-hyun. The short animation recently screened at the Korean Cultural Office's weekly film night program called Cinema on the Park. It's a fast passed action-packed short animation with a heart of gold. Read on below!

1. How did you get into the film industry / Why did you get in to filmmaking?

어릴 적부터 이야기든 그림이든, 그리고 만드는 것을 좋아했습니다. 여러가지 창작활동을 해보다가 지금은 애니메이션을 만드는 곳까지 왔습니다. 제가 만든 이야기를 보고 다른 사람들이 공감하고 즐길 수 있다면 좋겠다고 생각하여 창작활동을 시작하였습니다.

I have liked writing stories and drawing pictures from childhood. I currently produce animated films. I just wanted many people to enjoy my films. That is why I started filmmaking. 

2. What/Who inspires you as an artist?

좋은 글, 좋은 그림 등 좋은 작품들은 항상 저에게 좋은 동기를 부여해줍니다. 보는 사람들로 하여금 미소 짓고 기쁘고 따듯한 마음을 들게 하는 좋은 작품을 저도 만들어보고 싶어지기 때문입니다. Nice writings and pictures always make me feel inspired because they encourage me to make good works. 

3. Can you tell us more about your film? What made you want to tell such a story?

제 이야기는 개인의 경험이나 누군가의 이야기에서 비롯되곤 합니다.그리고 그 이야기를 통해 제가 느끼는 것을 여러분에게 전달하는 것이 저의 의도입니다. 이번 작품인 Flying Accident는 그런 제가 경험한 것들 중 고난과 역경을 이겨나가면 그 끝에 크나큰 보상이 있을 것이라는 이야기를 담고 있습니다. 

My film is related to an individual's experience or someone's story. My duty is to convey what I am feeling from many stories. Flying Accident is about a big reward coming after bearing many hardships. It is also one of my personal experiences. 

4. Are you excited to have an Australian screening at Cinema on the Park Korean Film Night in Sydney? How do you think the Australian audience will respond to the film?

제가 만든 이야기를 누군가에게 보여주는 것은 언제나 기대되고 즐겁습니다. 그렇기에 세계의 많은 분들이 봐주신다는 것에 기쁘고 감사하게 생각하고 있습니다.여러분들이 이 이야기를 보고 웃어 주신다면 좋겠습니다. 웃음을 통해 활력소를 얻고 이야기 속에서 따스함을 느껴주시길 바랍니다. 

It is a happy thing to show my film to people. Therefore, I think it is glorious that many people in the world will watch my film. I hope that people will like my film and feel energized. 

5. What’s next for you? Do you have a project/study/work planned?

저는 아직 한창 공부하고 배울 때라고 생각합니다. 더 많이 보고 더 많이 배워서 더 좋은 이야기를 여러분에게 전달하는 것이 제가 목표로 하는 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 앞으로도 창작활동을 멈추지 않을 것입니다. 그때 또 즐거운 마음으로 여러분에게 저의 이야기를 전달 할 수 있으면 좋겠습니다. 

I think I should study and learn more and more because my goal is to convey many good stories to many people. Therefore, I will keep doing creative activities and I wish I can continuously tell my stories to you with delightfulness.
