First up is an interview with Park Seung-min, director of the delightful short MY CINEMATIC SEPARATION. A funny, heartfelt love story of how one overcomes a lost love. Read on below!
My Cinematic Separation, April 4th at Cinema on the Park in Sydney
1. How did you get into the film industry / Why did you get in to filmmaking?
미술을 공부하던 고등학교 시절, 우연히 쿠엔틴 타란티노 감독의 <킬빌> 예고편을 보게 되었습니다. 그리고 그 예고편 하나에 매료되어 친구들을 모아 조그만 영화를 찍기 시작했습니다. 이 일이 계기가 되어 대학에서 디자인을 전공하면서도 연극이나 영화 쪽에 일을 하며 4개의 단편영화를 찍었죠. 영화를 찍는다는 것은 매우 힘들고 어렵지만 그 못지않게 즐겁고 행복한 일입니다. 매우 중독성이 강하죠. 제가 영화를 하는 이유는 영화에 중독되었기 때문입니다.
When I was a high school student studying art, I coincidently watched the trailer of "Kill Bill" by Quentin Tarantino. I was interested in it and I gathered my friends. Then, I made a short film with them together. I also produced 4 short films studying a play and movie majoring in design in the university at the same time. It is very difficult to do filmmaking but it is delightful and addictive. That is the reason why I am a filmmaker.
2. What/Who inspires you as an artist?
요즘은 영화 시장이 세계적으로 많이 개방됨에 따라 멋진 작품들을 쉽게, 또 많이 접할 수 있게 되었습니다. 그리고 그 작품들은 저에게 많은 영향과 새로운 세계를 경험하게 해줍니다. 그런 경험은 저에게 많은 영향을 미치기 때문에 그 중 몇 개의 작품을 고르는 것은 매우 힘든 일입니다. 서열을 가리기 힘들만큼 너무나 존경하는 아티스트들과 좋아하는 작품이 정말 많거든요.
It is easy to get aceess to many good films these days as the global film market has been developing immensely. Many excellent movies help me to experience the new world and have a good impact on me. Therefore, it is hard to choose which one is the best. I think there are so many respectful artists and good movies to be inspired by.
3. Can you tell us more about your film? What made you want to tell such a story?
언제가 부터 우리가 사는 세상에 사랑이라는 단어가 흔해졌습니다. 그에 따라 당연히 이별이라는 단어 또한 흔해졌고요. 이처럼 감정이 차고 넘쳐 밋밋해진 세상에, 사랑과 이별을 영화처럼 아름답게 꿈꾸는 상처받은 바보를 보여주고 싶었습니다.
The word 'love' has been used commonly and parting has been used accordingly. I wanted to show warmth and true love in my film to people in the dreary world.
4. Are you excited to have an Australian screening at Cinema on the Park Korean Film Night in Sydney? How do you think the Australian audience will respond to the film?
영화를 하는 저로서는 정말 매우 기쁘고 즐거운 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 비록 많이 부족한 영화지만 국내가 아닌 외국에서 제 영화를 상영할 기회가 생긴 것이니까요. 특히나 호주한국영화제에서 상영하다니 믿을 수가 없어요. 정말 진심으로 영광스럽게 생각하고 또한 감사하게 생각합니다. 즐겁고 재미있게, 또한 영화 속의 그녀를 사랑스럽게 보아주시면 좋겠습니다.
I feel happy and excited about it. Even though my film is lacking, I have a chance my film is screened abroad. I can't believe there are Korean Film screenings in Sydney. I am really honoured and I hope the audience will like my film.
5. What’s next for you? Do you have a project/study/work planned?
현재 <내가 죽은 마을>이라는 단편영화를 후반 작업하고 있습니다. 처음 시도하는 공포영화이기도 하고 개인적으로 정성을 많이 들인 작품이라 당분간은 영화를 완성하는데 열중할 생각입니다. 그리고 영화를 완성한 후에는 장편 시나리오를 쓸 계획입니다.
I have been doing the post-production stage of my latest short film. It is my first horror movie and I have made it elaborately. Therefore, I will focus on finishing it for a while. After that, I will write a feature film script.
